ITALIAN GREYHOUND RESCUE

In 2007, nearly 1000 IGs came into rescue in the United States.  Most of these dogs began their lives in high volume "mills" and made their way through the pet stores, from people breeding their pet female to make some extra money, and from "internet stores" that offer puppies without regard to where they go.

In nearly all cases, the dogs ended up with families that found that this isn't the right breed for them for a variety of reasons, from housetraining issues to having a human baby and not wanting the dog anymore.  Regardless of the reasons...nearly 1000 loving dogs found themselves needing someone to care for them and love them as they deserve to be loved.  1000...this is an ENORMOUS number!!!  It boggles the mind!

Some of the rescue stories will wrench the heart from all but the coldest hearted individual.  They will tear at your gut, they will eat at your soul, they will cause you to reel with disgust over just HOW anyone can treat anything with such blatant disregard.  They will also cause you to stop and think (I hope) and to thank the people that step up to the plate time and time again, at the enormous cost to their budgets, their physical well being, and their emotional well being.

Rescue was originally planned to be a way for breeders and owners who had suffered tragic life changing disaster to know that their dogs would be taken care of properly.  This was geared mainly to those who passed away, who were suffering from critical or terminal illness, or the loss of their home to fire or other natural disaster.  It has, unfortunately, had to morph over the ensuing years into a web of groups who are charged not only with rescuing the dogs that are in need, but also in cleaning up the mess left by unscrupulous breeders.

If you find it in your heart to share your home with a rescue IG, either permanently, or as a foster home in your area, please visit the links below to see how you can help. Sometimes transport is needed to get a dog or dogs from one part of the country to another.  Again, you might be able to help.   If you want to help in other ways, donations in many forms are always welcomed by these groups to help offset the great costs involved in this work.  Often you will see auctions for rescue posted on Ebay, or through the IGRF, for wonderful dog related items.

If you need a reason to help other than that you love dogs, please read Snow White's story.
