8/29/2003 - 4/3/2008 Sometimes, no matter how we try to keep them safe, fate has a way of stealing them from us long before we're ready to say goodbye. Thank you Melissa for loving Abee.
Abee came into our lives at the age of 10 months. Her breeder had named her "Dottie". She hated the name, and decided that she liked the name "Maggie Magoo" better. This is what we called her while she lived with us. When we decided to place her in a pet home, her new "mom" decided that the name Abee suited her, and Abee concurred. Abee was one of the most feral personalities that I've ever encountered in an Italian Greyhound. We knew when we started looking for that perfect home for her that this was going to be a real issue, and something that we would have to consider carefully. We were prepared for her to live with us forever if that perfect home didn't present itself. We could not have dreamed of a better home than the one she had with Melissa. Under Melissa's care and encouraged by her unconditional love, Abee thrived. Although she never became fond of strange people or places, she did manage to befriend a few people outside her immediate family. When Melissa called me to tell me that Abee had escaped from her fenced backyard, my heart sank. Despite all the loving care, and safety precautions, the very worst had happened. The following days were spent with Melissa blanketing the area with fliers, talking to everyone she could think of that might have seen Abee or have some information. We posted the missing dog information on every internet board we could think of, and the support and suggestions that poured in were mind-boggling. We even got an email with suggestions from the woman that headed the extensive search for Vivi, the missing Westminster whippet from a couple of years ago. On April 9, I got the phone call from Melissa that I had prayed would not come. It had been confirmed by several witnesses that Abee had been struck and killed by an automobile on Thursday night, not far from her home. Although our hearts are broken knowing that Abee will no longer be a physical part of our lives, we are thankful for the time we had with her, and that when the end came, it was quick. We are also thankful that there is closure, as the agony of not knowing is difficult to bear. Thank you to everyone who lent support and suggestions, and who prayed for Abee. Your kindness will not be forgotten.
